Looking After Your Windows & Doors
How to look after uPVC and aluminium windows, composite doors and conservatories — simple cleaning and maintenance tips from the people who make them.
uPVC and aluminium windows and doors are wonderfully low-maintenance — but a few minutes of care a couple of times a year keeps everything looking and working like new. Here's our straightforward guide.
uPVC frames
- Wash frames down with warm soapy water and a soft cloth two or three times a year — more often on coastal properties around Cleethorpes where salt spray builds up.
- Never use abrasive cleaners, solvent cleaners or scouring pads on foiled (woodgrain or coloured) frames — they can damage the finish.
- White uPVC can be brightened with a dedicated uPVC cream cleaner; test foiled finishes in an unobtrusive spot first.
Aluminium frames
Powder-coated aluminium just needs the same warm soapy wash. On bi-folds and sliders, keep the bottom track clear of grit and leaves — a quick brush or vacuum of the track keeps the rollers gliding smoothly.
Hardware, locks and hinges
Once a year, give hinges, locks and handles a light lubrication with a dry PTFE spray or a drop of fine oil — avoid thick grease, which attracts grit. If a handle stiffens or a door starts catching, call us; adjustment is usually a five-minute job done right.
Glass and seals
Sealed double-glazed units last many years, but if you ever notice persistent misting between the panes, the unit has failed — contact us and we'll replace the glass unit while keeping your frame. Wipe rubber gaskets with a damp cloth; avoid solvents.
Composite doors
The GRP skin never needs painting — just an occasional wipe down. Lubricate the multi-point lock's hooks and the cylinder once a year, and check the door still lifts and locks smoothly.
Conservatories and solid roofs
Keep guttering clear, wash frames as above, and leave tiled Leka roofs alone — they're designed to be maintenance-free. If you have Skylite glazed panels, clean them as you would any roof window.
